Team

The Architect Directors of Mason & Wales Architects are Ashley Muir, Francis Whitaker, and Hamish Muir.

Mason & Wales Architects has a core team of senior staff members personnel who have been with the practice for many years and provide invaluable experience and expertise to the work of the practice.

Mason & Wales Architects currently employs fifteen people in our Dunedin office of wide ranging age, experience and culture, offering a depth and diversity of experience in all facets of Architectural Practice.

Mason & Wales Architects has a policy of employing a high ratio of Architects to Technical Staff. The team currently includes; Registered Architects, Architectural Graduates, Architectural Draftsmen, Technicians and Students as well as Administration and Support Staff.

We have established arrangements to employ additional architectural staff on contract as necessary to fast-track the preparation of Drawings when required to produce construction documentation to meet compressed project programmes.

C. Ashley Muir

C. Ashley Muir graduated from the School of Architecture at the University of Auckland in 1969, and joined Mason & Wales Architects in 1970.

Ashley has been a Councillor of the NZ Institute of Architects for three terms and, twice, Chairman of the Southern Branch of the NZ Institute of Architects, and is an elected Fellow of the NZ Institute of Architects.

Ashley has been responsible for the design of a large number of buildings of all types throughout New Zealand. 

His work has been recognised by a considerable number of New Zealand Institute of Architects, Design Awards including two New Zealand Institute of Architects, National Design Awards for the Administration Building at the Port Chalmers Container Terminal and the Otago Harbour Board, Head Office Building at Dunedin.

Ashley is involved in the management of the firm, and in all facets of architectural practice from briefing and design, through the preparation of construction documentation and contract administration.

Francis Whitaker

Francis Whitaker graduated from the School of Architecture at the University of Auckland in 1977.

Francis worked at Mason & Wales Architects from 1979 to 1981, following a period working in architectural practices in New Zealand.

He then travelled overseas working in architectural practices in England and the Middle East before rejoining Mason & Wales Architects in 1983.

Francis displays exceptional originality and creativeness in the design of a wide range of building types introducing human scale, visual interest and colour into the buildings for the enjoyment of building users and community.

He communicates his ability to conceptualise and ‘see’ buildings through excellent illustrations of the designs which are of great benefit to Clients in their understanding and development of the designs.

Francis is involved in all facets of architectural practice with particular emphasis on building planning and design, urban planning and large scale land and subdivision planning.

Hamish M. Muir

Hamish M. Muir is a third generation Dunedin Architect. He studied Architecture at the University of Otago and Victoria University and graduated in 2000 with a Bachelor of Architecture Honours degree.

He worked in an architectural practice in Wellington, on award winning residential projects, before travelling overseas and then returning home to Dunedin in 2005 to join Mason & Wales Architects.

Hamish became a Registered Architect in 2006 and is a Committee Member of the Southern Branch of the New Zealand Institute of Architects.

He is interested in the Environmentally Sustainable Design of buildings, and has completed Green Star Accredited Professional Training.

Hamish is involved in all facets of the design and construction of both commercial and residential buildings of all types, including new construction and additions and alterations.

Stephen Loach

Stephen Loach joined the practice of Mason & Wales Architects in 1969.

He completed his apprenticeship as a Draughtsperson and through his own skill and ability has risen to a senior position at Mason & Wales.

Stephen’s work includes all facets of Architectural practice including design, documentation and the administration of projects from smaller alteration contracts and private houses to multimillion dollar institutional and commercial projects.

Stephen is particularly sensitive to the planning and design of projects and exhibits great care in the documentation and administration of projects.

Alan Anderson

Alan joined Mason & Wales Architects in 1984.

He has vast experience and outstanding skills in the preparation of construction documentation and the administration of the construction of buildings of all types.

Alan is involved with a wide range of projects in the office, and oversees a number of different project teams, providing invaluable technical experience throughout all stages of the project development, from initial space planning to completed construction.

Steve Gilbertson

Steve joined Mason & Wales Architects in 1984.

He is particularly skilled in the documentation and administration of the construction of large and complex building projects, and has been intimately involved with the buildings for Fisher & Paykel Healthcare in Auckland.
